Explanation of H. R. 5879 in Layman's Terms
This bill is about giving recognition to the United States Merchant Mariners who served during World War II. These mariners played a crucial role in delivering supplies and equipment to the troops fighting in the war. The bill proposes awarding them a Congressional Gold Medal as a way to honor their service and sacrifices. The gold medal will be designed by the Secretary of the Treasury and will be displayed at the American Merchant Marine Museum for public viewing and research. Duplicates of the medal may also be made and sold in bronze to cover the costs. The bill also defines the status of the medals as national medals and numismatic items under U.S. law.
