Bill Summary - Requirement for Voter Identification
This bill proposes an amendment to the election law in the state of New York. The amendment would require voters to present identification before casting their vote on a voting machine. It also seeks to repeal a section of the law relating to initial voter identification.
Under the proposed amendment, if a voter's name appears in the computer-generated registration list without verified identity information, the inspector at the polling place would be required to ask the voter to provide one of the following forms of identification:
A driver's license or non-driver photo identification card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles
A photo identification card issued by any public or private college or university in the United States
Other documents for proof of identity as specified in the rules and regulations of the State Board of Elections, which should align with the identification requirements established by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The bill also repeals an existing section of the election law relating to initial voter identification.
This bill would become effective on the first day of September following its enactment.
