Bill Explanation
Senate Bill No. 1464
This bill amends existing law related to law enforcement's role in enforcing public health orders in California. Currently, sheriffs and peace officers can enforce orders from the Department of Public Health or local health officers to prevent the spread of diseases.
This bill changes the requirement to make it mandatory for sheriffs and peace officers to enforce these orders. It also stops state funds from going to law enforcement agencies that publicly oppose or adopt policies against public health orders.
If the Commission on State Mandates determines that this bill creates costs for local agencies, those costs will be reimbursed by the state.
